AI from zero · Lesson 001

What is AI? Here is the basic answer.

AI is a computer tool that finds patterns and makes a guess. That is not the whole science. It is the right place to start.

Start with pictures

Imagine we show a computer a lot of pictures of cats and dogs. We tell it which ones are cats and which ones are dogs. After enough examples, it starts finding clues. Pointy ears. Face shape. Fur. Size.

Then we show it a picture it has never seen. It uses the patterns it found and makes a guess: cat or dog.

That is a simple example of AI. It saw examples, found patterns, and used those patterns to make a new guess.

ChatGPT does this with words

ChatGPT learned patterns from a very large amount of information. When you type a question, it works out what words are likely to make an answer that fits.

That answer can sound smart because the patterns are very good. It can still be wrong. A confident answer is not proof that the answer is true.

What AI is good at

  • finding patterns in a lot of information;
  • turning a mess into a first draft or summary;
  • giving you ideas and possible next steps;
  • working with words, pictures, sound, and files;
  • doing repeated work faster.

What it is not

  • It is not a person.
  • It does not care what happens.
  • It does not automatically know what is true.
  • It cannot take responsibility for your decision.
  • It does not need to run your whole life.

The one rule to keep

Give AI a job. Do not hand it the final say.

Let it help you understand, sort, draft, compare, or begin. Check anything important. You are still the person making the decision.

Stop here

You do not need to know every tool. You do not need to understand the engineering. You do not need to keep up with every announcement.

For now, know this: AI finds patterns and makes guesses. Some guesses work. Important guesses need checking. That is enough for Lesson 001.
